Changes
November 4th, 2008
Tonight, I have witnessed what I honestly thought I would never see. I wrote the following on May 13th, 2005, when asked by Nicole if thought I’d live to see a black President:
I don’t think so. As much as I would love to see that, I know it’s probably not going to happen in my lifetime. There is still too much prejudice in our society for that. We’ve made a great steps, but if people take issue to me and you dating, how would they deal with a black president.
There are few times when I will ever be more happy, to be so wrong. Tupac, we are ready now.
And although it seems heaven sent,
We ain’t ready, to see a black President.
-”Changes” Tupac

Now, the work must begin. Obama has a MANDATE for change. He symbolizes change. He preaches change. Now, we must help him enact change.

Tupac’s song “Changes” really captures the emotions of the time. The song was written in the early 90’s and we’re now here at this monumental time in history more than 12 years later. There have been changes, but we have to recognize the fact that Obama is a self-identified African American although he is biologically biracial and was raised by white grandparents and was elected after (and perhaps because) GWBush ruined the country. So are we, as a voting public, really over all of our prejudices? No. Absolutely not. This is one giant leap towards erasing the discrimination all minorities feel, but we’re still very far off the goal.
