One of Those Weekends

October 20th, 2003

It was a crazy weekend. Definetly that. Well, it was completely crazy. It was just…kind of filled. A lot happened, a lot was done, yet I had enough time to enjoy life. Which is good. Unfortunatly, it meant cutting out things like sleep. But that is life.

First there was the road trip. It was good to finally get away from Princeton, and band road trips are always fun. The ride up was pretty fun, a typical band trip. Getting to Brown is generally a long process, and being the first road trip, we partied pretty hard on the way up.

Being Brown, we also partied hard when we got there. The Brown Band is a cool group of people, so fun was had by all. Albeit, it wasn't as awesome as last year, but it was parents weekend and the Brown Band was a bit preoccupied.

Saterday was good, although not as good as I had hoped for. We didn't sound as good as we normally do, which was a bit sad. It didn't help that we were exhausted from the night before (most of us didn't sleep very well). Things got going late and we had to do a bit of scrambling (no pun intended) in order to get everywhere. *shrugs* I would have liked some things to go differently, but that's life. At least we won.

Unfortunatly, during the game, one of the Brown cheerleaders was seriously hurt. What was worse, we didn't find out till after we had played a song through the stoppage of play. Because the officials didn't call an injury timeout, no one on our side of the stands new till we stopped and pointed it out. What's worse, the YES network was covering the game and switched to us playing instead of the injury. I feel like shit considering I was the one who had us start playing. Granted I didn't know what was going on, but still. I need to get in contact with the girl.

Coming back from Brown was kind of a long trip. People were exhausted and just kind of out of it. It was definetly unlike most of the return trips I've been on, especially considering we won. I think the events of the day just took their toll and most people merely wanted to get home and go to bed.

I actually didn't go right to bed, instead I caught the end of the Yankees game with Nicole and hung out with her for a while. Which was nice. Nicole is awesome, and I've really enjoyed spending a lot of time with her these past couple of weeks. I guess I haven't talked about it at all, but Nicole and I have been spending a crap-ton of time together. It just kind of happened. We both broke up with people the same weekend, and since such things are better to go through with someone, we began spending a lot of time together. I've found it to be very helpful with the breaking up process. Especially with dealing with some of the after effects of breaking up.

In contrast to Saterday, today was pretty chill. I TAed. Worked on my independent work presentation. I have a different topic after having talked with the head of independent work for the department. Should be interesting. I also got some digital photo work finished. I got back a bunch of pictures from the summer and I hope to get them up on the site in a bit.

So yeah, it's been an up and down weekend. Fast, slow, up, down, rocky, smooth, relaxed, and stressed. But, it's time to move on to the week. It's going to be a long one, but shouldn't be too bad. Oh wait…it's Midterm Week. Nevermind. Crap. Oh well. At least I only have two midterms.

What a Game

October 17th, 2003

Ok, so that was possibly one of the greatest baseball games I have ever seen. I can't believe how that went. So fricken crazy. Sorry to all the Red Sox fans, but at least it was a good game.

I will say, the game tonight made things interesting. There are a lot of Yankees fans here in Princeton, as well as Red Sox fans. You can imagine what it was like leaving the Friend Center (I was TAing during the game) and hearing all the screams. It was funny, you could see who had routed for whom, just by the way people walked. Kind of interesting really.

And while people will say that hindsite is 20/20, I would just like to mention, I told the people I was with that Martinez should have come out of the game when he returned in the 8th. But then again, I'm the man like that. :)

Gay Jeans Day

October 14th, 2003

Please excuse me, but it's soapbox time again. And well…I have a few things to say.

Today is apparently Gay Jeans Day; at least it is here on campus. I don’t know if it’s a national thing or not, and I don’t really care, because it is on campus. So that makes it important.

As I right this, I’m currently wearing a pair of green khaki pants that zip off into shorts. I’m wearing these cloths because when I woke up this morning, I was unaware of it being gay jeans day. So I just chose some pants. I found out about Gay Jeans Day because I was accosted in my eating club for not wearing jeans. People immediately wanted to assume I was against homosexuality, based on what I was wearing.

I found this to be funny. The same type of faceless, unquestioning judgments that the people I ate lunch with were trying to fight, were being made against me by those same people. What is even stranger, is they just expected people to know, without telling anyone. Maybe because I’ve been sick, or trying to get through all of my own things, but I haven’t seen a thing talking about Gay Jeans Day. Had I known, I would have probably put on a pair of jeans. Yet I didn’t get the memo.

This raises another problem I’m currently facing. I don’t like the idea of a Wear Jeans if you’re in support of Homosexuality day. I don’t like the idea of an ordinary piece of clothing being used. It creates false pretexts of whether people support something or not. The idea of Gay Jeans Day is the same as “Wear a shirt to show your support for Princeton Day.” People wear jeans all of the time, it’s a normal article of clothing. There are people on this campus wearing jeans, not because they support homosexuality, but because they got up and said, “I want to wear jeans today.” If showing support means wearing something specific, make it that, specific. Gay Red Shirt Day. Gay Pink Bandana Day. Gay Tie-Dye Shirt Day. These work. These are not items people wear on a regular basis. And tell people about it. Make it known to the community. Spread some word. Don’t just come out and say it on the day of. Let people know.

Finally, I’m a little miffed at how people seem to assume that if you aren’t wearing a button, or have a patch sewn on, or wearing a t-shirt, you don’t believe or support something. I always find it interesting to see all of the buttons in support of various things on campus. I find it interesting because I have never had a desire to wear such a button. I let my actions say what I believe. Pat and I were talking one day about religion, and it finally occurred to him that, I was actually religious enough to date one of our friends who has gone on record saying I wasn’t. And this was all because I don’t wear the buttons or belong to the groups that show what I believe.

What’s saddest to me about today is, it just goes to show how shallow people can be. It’s really disappointing in a way. I didn’t wear jeans, so I’m against homosexuals. I don’t wear a cross, so I’m obviously not Christian. I don’t have any ribbons pinned to my bags or shirts, so I’m against finding cures for Aids and Breast Cancer. But what can I do. My actions obviously speak more quietly than what I wear.

Until I Build a Quotes and Sayings Page

October 13th, 2003

I present the following from Evan's Profile:

Everything I need to know about relationships I learned from Mario:

Lesson no. 1: If someone gets between you and your woman, you should either stomp on his head or light him on fire.
Lesson no. 2: Look before you leap into that green pipe of commitment, or else the piranha plant of emotional baggage might bite you in the butt.
Lesson no. 3: You can search all you want for the girl of your dreams, you can brave the dungeon of vulnerability, avoid the fireballs of embarrassment and dodge the dragon of apocalyptic, life-shattering rejection, but seven times out of eight your only reward will be a midget in a vest saying, “Sorry, your princess is in another castle.”

That is all.

Sigh… Life is Good

October 12th, 2003

The title comes from Sarah's away message at this time. I think this expresses the overall sentament of the people around me. Life is good, which is funny, because most of us are stressed to the hilt. I have a good deal of work to do, yet, at the same time, I feel strangly free.

This week has been kind of long.I had stuff due in English and AI, as well as Digital Photo. I just had a lot of stuff. I was pretty stressed about it. But things will be good. I think I'm going to P/D/F English, just so I can work hard, but not be quite as pressured by it. Although, at the same time, it's probably best that I don't. Yeah, that's the better idea.

Outside of work, the social thing has been…fun. Things with Sarah appear to be getting better. Which is nice. Having people angry at you is generally not cool, especially with whom you were very close. I hope to get stuff ironed out with that in the coming days.

I've also found out that a lot of things are not as they appear with my friends. Funnny how I've managed to miss things. Yeah, a lot needs to be worked on in the coming weeks. Man alive. I have new people to take care of, well, new in that I let them fall by the wayside abit. Fortunatly, there is time to make ammends.

So, the cool things of the week have definetly been a few things. Firstly, I got videos of all of the Queer Eye For the Straight Guy episodes. I love this show. I mean, where else can you watch five gay guys make fun of some hapless loser. Simply brilliant.

Secondly, I got to see my parents on Friday. They were up to see my uncle get married (Congrats Steve and Donna!) and so they came by Princeton. That was fun, we ate at campus. They gave me my birthday gift (a brand new Camera bag which is the sweetness), an we got a chance to spend a little bit of time together. This ruled.

Finally, I saw George Clinton and the P-Funk All-Stars tonight in a free concert. It was awsome. They played a lot of cool stuff with really long improv solos. What's even cooler, is that they rocked so hard, they first blew out the PA system. Then they blew out their amplifiers. They rocked that much.

So yeah, a lot going on, and this is the first time I've really been able to update the site. I'm happy. *noddles* Later all.
